Join us for this talk and Q&A on how dardishi started, and how they continue to run it today. If you’re thinking of starting an online zine, or if you already running one, hopefully this talk will answer some lingering questions that you might have!
Dardishi is an online zine run by Arab women, with a focus on writing and artwork produced by Arab women. Their website was launched on International Women’s Day 2016 by co-founders, editors and sisters Samar and Yasmine Ziadat. Since then, dardishi has expanded into a diverse team of writers, artists, illustrators, journalists and activists.
‘Dardishi’ is the feminine verb for ‘chitchat’ in Arabic; this name is used because the zine’s formation was largely inspired by all the incredible conversations the sisters had with their female Arab friends and family. The name dardishi also says a lot about the tone of the work they publish – informal, conversational work that spurs a wider dialogue on Arab women’s issues.
